How to Do This Activity

Set aside time each day to sit together and talk about feelings. Ask your child how they felt during different parts of their day. Listen closely and respond with warmth to whatever they share. You might say something like, "It sounds like you felt proud when you finished that puzzle." This simple conversation shows your child that their emotions matter to you.

Why It Works

Responding warmly to your child's emotional expressions strengthens your bond and helps them develop better emotion regulation skills. Research shows that maternal responsiveness to children's emotional needs predicts better negative affect regulation and increased empathy (Davidov & Grusec, 2006). When you consistently show interest in your child's feelings, you build the foundation for a close relationship that lasts into adulthood.

Tips for Parents

Make eye contact and put away distractions during this time. If your child struggles to name feelings, offer gentle prompts like "happy," "frustrated," or "excited." You can share your own feelings too, which helps your child see that everyone has emotions. Keep your tone warm and curious, not interrogating. Some days your child may have little to say, and that's okay.
