Friendship obstacle course

4–5 yearsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Household items like chairs, rope or tape for boundaries, pillows, and a scarf for blindfold

Create a simple obstacle course where children must work together to complete challenges. For example, two children hold hands and walk through the course together, or one child guides a blindfolded partner using only words. Each challenge requires cooperation and communication. Children learn to trust each other, give clear instructions, and coordinate their movements with a partner.

How to Do This Activity

Create a simple obstacle course where children must work together to complete challenges. For example, two children hold hands and walk through the course together, or one child guides a blindfolded partner using only words. Each challenge requires cooperation and communication. Children learn to trust each other, give clear instructions, and coordinate their movements with a partner.

Why It Works

Social skills instruction and practice significantly improve children's academic performance and peer relationships. Research shows that students who received social skills instruction performed significantly better on standardized achievement tests, and social skills were an important predictor of children's ability to learn to read (McClelland, M. M., et al., 2013). Cooperative activities at this age build the social competence that predicts school success.

Tips for Parents

Start with easier challenges and gradually increase difficulty as children get better at working together. When conflicts arise, coach children through solving the problem themselves rather than stepping in immediately. Ask, "What could you try differently together?"
