How to Do This Activity

Read a story together about friendship, then talk about what makes a good friend. Ask your child to share who their friends are and what they like about them. You can draw pictures of friends together or act out parts of the story. This helps your child think about their own friendships and what they value in relationships.

Why It Works

Children at this age can understand others' perspectives and think about relationships in meaningful ways. Talking about friendship explicitly teaches the skills they need to build and maintain connections. (Source: Dunn, J., & Cutting, A. L. (1999). Understanding others, and individual differences in friendship interactions in young children. Social Development, 8(2), 201-219.)

Tips for Parents

Let your child lead the conversation about their friends. Listen without judging their friendship choices. Ask open questions like "What do you and your friend like to do together." or "How do you help each other." This builds their awareness of what makes friendships strong.
