How to Do This Activity
Throughout your activities together, model and encourage growth-oriented language. When something is difficult, say things like, 'This is tricky, but I can keep trying' or 'I have not figured this out yet.' Help your child add 'yet' to their statements about challenges. Point out specific evidence of their growth and learning. Make this a natural part of your conversations rather than a formal lesson.
Why It Works
The language we use shapes how children think about challenges and their own abilities. Optimistic self-talk helps children view difficulties as temporary and surmountable rather than permanent limitations. Research demonstrates that perseverance and optimism significantly predict mastery goals and academic achievement, with the way children talk to themselves about challenges directly influencing their ability to persist and succeed (Ng, 2022). Teaching children to use growth-oriented language builds their resilience and willingness to tackle new challenges.
Tips for Parents
Model this language yourself first. Children learn more from what you do than what you say to them.
Be specific when you point out growth. Instead of 'good job,' try 'you kept trying even when it was hard.'
Keep it conversational and genuine. Forced positivity feels hollow to children and to you.
