This vocal turn-taking builds the foundation for all future communication and social exchange. Research shows that social skills are an important predictor of children's ability to learn to read, with poor social skills in early grades leading to literacy struggles (McClelland et al., 2013). These early sound exchanges teach your child the fundamental structure of conversation: I speak, you listen and respond, then you speak, and I respond.
